Dr. C. Hall “Skip” Jones has been in love with music his whole life and enjoys passing that knowledge and experience along to his students. Itt is said that music is the universal language. A catchy melody is something that everyone enjoys and remembers.

There are a number of proven benefits associated with learning to play a musical instrument.

Here are 10 excellent and proven reasons why someone should put down the remote and pick up a musical instrument.

1. Music Can Boost Brain Power

Studies show a positive correlation between higher academic achievements by people who are exposed to music. Learning and playing music stimulates parts of the brain that are related to reading, math, and emotional development.

2. Music Can Improve Memory

Learning and playing music can help improve a person’s learning ability and memory by stimulating different patterns of brain development and providing the opportunity to exercise it.

3. Music Helps People Socially

Playing an instrument can help a person to break out of his or her social shell. Becoming involved in a musical group enhances important life skills such as how to relate to others, how to work as a team, and the development of discipline, management, and leadership skills.

4. Music is a Great Confidence Builder

There are few, if any, areas of life that aren’t enhanced by having a healthy level of self confidence. Learning to play a musical instrument can really help.

5. Music Teaches Patience

We live in a world of instant gratification, but real life demands having patience. When you are playing in a musical group you have to be willing to work as a team and wait for the appropriate times to make your contribution.

6. Music Can Help People to Connect

Who doesn’t sometimes feel a little disconnected from their lives? Music can be a much-needed connection. It makes people feel more alive and connected with themselves and with one another.

7. Music Requires Constant Learning

In music you can never truly learn everything there is to know. There are always new things to learn and new experiences to appreciate.

8. Music is a Great Form of Personal Expression

People pay a lot of lip-service to expressing themselves but how often do we really get the opportunity to do that? One excellent way to accomplish that is through music.

9. Music Teaches Discipline

There’s an old music joke that has a tourist stopping to ask a cab driver “How do I get to Carnegie Hall?” The cab driver looks at the tourist and answers “Practice!” To improve your musical knowledge and skills you have to not only do well in the lessons but you have to devote time to practicing in addition to the lessons. That requires personal discipline.

10. Music Fosters Creativity

Above all, playing music, particularly as we achieve more advanced levels, is a creative pursuit. Creativity is good for the mind, body, and soul.
